All PI talks are 20 minutes long, followed by 5 minutes of discussion. Students and data blitz speakers talks are 10 minutes long.
These 20 (or 10) minutes are not a goal, but an absolute limit! If you tend to go over time in your talks, plan for a shorter presentation. Speak through your talk at least once to make sure the timing is right.
PRESENTATIONS TO BE SENT BEFOREHAND!
All presentations will be held from an in-house computer. This reduces the chance of technical problems and the transition time between speakers. Forward your presentation by Monday, April 12th 2010. This time is necessary to check compatibility of all talks with our projection setup.
Send presentations in Powerpoint (2007 or earlier), Keynote (2009 or earlier), or PDF format and tell us whether it was made on a PC or a Mac. If your presentation is in a different format, contact the organizers.
Build slides that work in the dimensions of our projection equipment: squarescreen (4:3 aspect ratio), 1024x768 pixels. Our in-house presentation computers run Powerpoint and Keynote .
THINK BIG!
When preparing your presentation, think big! We are interested in how your results fit in the big picture. This also increases retention of your main message. Inspire your audience.
Also remember: Less is more. Do not try to present too much, but try to make a few point well. Break complicated slides down into several simpler ones that can be presented in a logical order.
To keep the text on your slides readeable, the absolute minimum font size is 24. This also counts for graphs with axes labels and numbering. Sans-serif fonts (like Helvetica) are easier to read at a distance than serif fonts (like Times New Roman). Avoid "headline and bullet-points" slides; they are tiring to read.
Stepping away from the podium and directly in front of your audience in will make your presentation more dynamic and interesting to watch (we have a wireless presenter).
